I grew up in Ventura, CA, where George Christie was President of the Hell's Angels. I'm pretty sure he was the longest active President in the club's history. Throughout my childhood, they would "patrol" the streets and the kids and families were quite scared of them. Later on, I got to know several ex-members and friends of prominent members, and also learned more about them when Christie started really telling his story. They were kicked out of town at some point. But it turns out, they actually had unofficial agreements with Law Enforcement to help keep gang activity under control in the city, and even though they were running drugs, etc, they did prioritize the safety of the community and kids,, obviously only to a degree. But as soon as they were gone, the city was overrun with gangs and street violence, drugs flooded the streets, and things got much worse. It wasn't like they were saints, but they did keep their business to themselves for the most part, and definitely contributed to preventing widespread gang activity. A lot of people think George Christie is the ultimate snitch, but he's a pretty cool guy and does stand on principle. Now, the county has the highest number of people on probation per capita in the entire state, the Law Enforcement system is beyond corrupt, the primarily Mexican gangs have spread drugs all throughout places that were never associated with drugs, and homelessness, violence, and crime in general has been out of control.

I think we need to not be so fast to judge or perceive mental illness from a cookie cutter perspective and always a horrible thing and be more open minded.. If you have ever been depressed or had anxiety and reached out for help, even if it was one phone call with a counselor, a record was created and you would otherwise be denied employment as a fbi agent because of that moment in your life.
