in fact, having rare corals in an aquarium is important since in nature they are being destroyed by sewage, oil spills, increased incidence of light increasing oxygen levels, there are even corals that are no longer available in nature because of the environment. destroyed

The laws written which set 'what is' and 'what is not' illegal were written decades ago when many of these species were 'impossible' to keep. Worse the taxonomy and classification of these organisms have progressed with genetic technique, while the laws governing their trade have remained fixed in the 20th century. Most conservation laws were written at a time when human captivity was a death sentence for these animals. Where instead, they can now thrive. Then there is the topic of aquaculture, where many of these corals are generations-removed from the reefs they were once collected from, in which there continued presence in the hobby puts zero pressure on a wild reef. Few of us want to see an endangered animal collected from the wild. No one is arguing for that. However, these laws are often blatantly outdated and give little care to the legal and beneficial trade which it regulates. This story misses the opportunity to show the positive side of the aquarium trade. The groups of hobby reef keepers who go to great lengths to legally care for and propagate corals, at a time when many of these species face an uncertain future in the wild. It is that very hobby trade which developed most of the off-the-shelf technologies public aquariums and rescue projects utilize for coral restoration activities. Techniques like water fractionation and coral fragmentation were proven not by labs, but again by that hobby community this story unfairly villainized. The controller systems which make captive coral spawning a reality was again developed within the hobby, not research. Many of the lighting systems used for these photosynthetic organisms, again the hobby. One of the greatest allies these aquariums and researchers could have, are coral hobbiest's. This portrayal is one sided at best. And that's being generous. Many of the coral organisms shown, are fully legal. With the vast majority of hobbiest's happily adhering to strict regulations. Your thumbnail, is a coral which dominates the legal trade. For many of us, these animals are given a far higher quality of care than most Americans give there dogs and cats. You highlighted roughly 200 seized illegal coral, and then mischaracterized the tens of thousands of legally grown, harvested, and traded corals; as well as, the passionate and dedicated hobbiest's how are in many ways working in parallel with researchers and conservationists. And by ignoring that side of your story, you've managed to do a remarkable disservice in your reporting.

They take em from other people to put on their display and charge people to come look at it. Just another way for them to make money smh

I thought coral are single-cell like algae?

They are guilty of trafficking wildlife themselves and continue to hold their offspring, for generations, in captivity.

Huge respect for what you're doing. I love our reefs and love keeping and caring for these animals. I hope people will realize the impact of illegal trade is never sustainable. It will always result in damages. Often those who are committing these types of crimes have little education or care for the animals being taken and trafficked. We can do better to stop this. I am happy to see them expanding this operation. Most people have no idea just how fragile the balance is and unique the symbiotic relationship corals and their symbionts have. Education is key to saving our reefs and saving these trafficked corals.

yeah ima call bs, they see a profit from it and want to put their grubby hands in it. none of this is helping and just more greed. I've been to their aquarium the coral there and the fish don't look nearly as good as the fish I've seen at hobbyists home.

Stop dumping water from "water treatment facilities" into the ocean. Removing these unaddressed toxins from this process will lead to an explosion of coral growth. Surprised the Georgia aquarium doesnt know that toxic/dirty water more often than not leads the destruction of corals and the reefs these corals reside in...

The Georgia Aquarium abuses marine mammals.

Sure, because a community of people growing and sharing frags of coral that mainly buys aquacultured corals to propagate and share is somehow the black market… Aquarists don’t even keep Atlantic corals due to the community following strict regulations, yet our industry has funded technology and partnerships to protect these species. The hobbyist industry has bankrolled programs to keep and propagate threatened Atlantic corals successfully in partnerships with universities and retail coral/fish shops. If this video wanted to actually save coral it would be to promote the banning of toxic sunscreen brands for people who snorkel on these monitored patch reefs in the Keys. This video just demonizes an entire industry of people who love reefs to create more support for the Georgia Aquarium’s image and funding, the Georgia Aquarium should focus more on its criminally small enclosures for its belugas.

Bruh majority of the coral trafficking was aqua cultures from indonesia & australia

It doesn't help that coral taxonomy can be a total mess. One could easily mistake one species for another. Lots of corals can be sold under incorrect names without ill-intent. But I also want to mention the impacts of the aquarium trade is utterly DWARFED by commercial fishing and tourism. Trawling and overfishing utterly demolishes ecosystems. I'd like to hear more specifics about the corals in question. But either way, I'm glad there are good people making efforts to care for corals. There are lots of hobbyists that do care about proper coral care and conservation.

They arbitrarily shut down coral and fish fisheries, I wonder how many are from native people aqua culturing . Hawaii ban is 100% unscientific you can catch the fish and eat them but not keep as pet. Although Florida native coral need protection from current disease.

Where did this places get their fish ? Did the ocean just give it to them ? Or did they take the wildlife aswell.

Just going to say this there are few spots that have coral. It isnt the black market. Can we name any Corals near big business lile resorts. Or i do know like one near u. Its not just people stealing it. Its people preventing its growth. Its called wild life because they need to be away from us. Not to mention how many cruises ships disperser currents and ad oil to the system..😂 nah its not people who can grown it in a tank.
